Samsung's GDDR7: A Game-Changer in Graphic Memory Technology

Updated: Jan 30

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has once again set a milestone in the world of semiconductor technology with the announcement of the industry's pioneering Graphics Double Data Rate 7 (GDDR7) DRAM. This cutting-edge development, following Samsung's groundbreaking 24Gbps GDDR6 DRAM in 2022, promises to redefine the landscape of graphic performance in next-generation systems.

Unprecedented Speed and Stability of GDDR7:

Samsung's 16-gigabit GDDR7 offering boasts the industry's highest speed to date, reaching an impressive bandwidth of 1.5 terabytes per second (TBps). This marks a 1.4 times improvement over its predecessor, GDDR6. The key to this remarkable achievement lies in innovations in integrated circuit (IC) design and packaging, ensuring added stability even during high-speed operations.

Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM3) Breakthrough:

A significant leap forward comes in the form of the Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM3) signaling method adopted for GDDR7. Departing from the Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) standard of previous generations, PAM3 allows 50 percent more data transmission within the same signaling cycle. This translates into enhanced bandwidth and performance, particularly beneficial for applications demanding outstanding graphic capabilities.

Energy Efficiency and Power-Saving Design:

In a nod to sustainability and power-conscious applications, Samsung's GDDR7 design stands out as 20 percent more energy-efficient compared to GDDR6. This achievement is complemented by a power-saving design technology optimized for high-speed operations. Additionally, for devices sensitive to power usage, such as laptops, Samsung offers a low-operating voltage option, further expanding the scope of GDDR7's applications.

Cool and Collected:

To address concerns related to heat generation, Samsung employs an epoxy molding compound (EMC) with high thermal conductivity in the packaging material. Combined with IC architecture optimization, these enhancements result in a 70-percent reduction in thermal resistance compared to GDDR6. This not only ensures stable product performance during high-speed operations but also underscores Samsung's commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of its semiconductor technologies.

Future Applications and Market Impact:

Yongcheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics, envisions GDDR7 making waves in areas requiring exceptional graphic performance. From workstations and PCs to game consoles, GDDR7 is set to elevate user experiences. Moreover, its potential extends to future applications such as AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and automotive vehicles, showcasing Samsung's dedication to staying at the forefront of technological advancements.

As the industry eagerly awaits the first installations in next-generation systems for verification later this year, Samsung's GDDR7 stands poised to drive the future growth of the graphics market, solidifying the company's technological leadership in this dynamic and ever-evolving field.
